Hemiptera

Hemiptera Dal greco μι-, hmi-, met, e πτερόν, ptern, ala.

Hemiptera From Greek μι-, hmi-, half, and πτερόν, ptern, wing, referring to the forewings of many heteropterans which are hardened near the base, but membranous at the ends. The forewings of Hemiptera are either entirely membranous, as in the Sternorrhyncha and Auchenorrhyncha, or partially hardened, as in most Heteroptera. Hemiptera is an order of insects most often known as the true bugs, comprising around 50,00080,000 species of cicadas, aphids, planthoppers, leafhoppers, shield bugs, and others. They range in size from 1 mm (0.04 in) to around 15 cm (6 in), and share a common arrangement of sucking mouthparts. Sometimes, the name true bugs is applied more narrowly still to insects of the suborder Heteroptera only.

The word Teraphim is explained in classical rabbinical literature as meaning disgraceful things (dismissed by modern etymologists), and in many English translations of the Bible it is translated as idols, or household god(s), though its exact meaning is more specific than this, but unknown precisely.

V

Vacuna nom. mythol. Aphidii
Vacuna was an ancient Sabine goddess, identified by ancient Roman sources and later scholars with numerous other goddesses, including Ceres, Diana, Nike, Minerva, Bellona, Venus and Victoria. She was mainly worshipped at a sanctuary in near Horace's villa (now in the commune of Licenza), in sacred woods at Reate, and at Rome. Renaissance authors and Leonhard Schmitz state that she was a divinity to whom the country people offered sacrifices when the labours of the field were over, that is, when they were at leisure, vacui. The etymology of her name is linked to lack and privation, and Horace appears to call upon her in favour of a friend to whom one of his epistles is addressed. From this, it has been conjectured that she was prayed to in favour of absent people, family members or friends.
Velia / Velides nom. propr. Ploteres
Velia, the ancient Greek town named Elea in Italy, now part of the municipality of Ascea, Province of Salerno. The Velia or Velian Hill or Velian Ridge is a saddle or spur stretching out from the middle of the north side of the Palatine Hill towards the Oppian Hill (itself a spur of the Esquiline Hill) in Rome.
