Mammalia

Mammalia The word mammal is modern, from the scientific name Mammalia coined by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, derived from the Latin mamma, the teat. All female mammals nurse their young with milk, which is secreted from special glands, the mammary glands. Mammals (class Mammalia Linnaeus, 1758) are a clade of endothermic amniotes distinguished from the reptiles and the birds by the possession of hair, three middle ear bones, mammary glands, and a neocortex (a region of the brain).

Crocotta nom. propr. Carnivora hyaenina
The crocotta (or corocotta, crocuta, leucrocotta, or yena), is a mythical dog-wolf of India or Ethiopia, linked to the hyena and said to be a deadly enemy of men and dogs. Pliny in his work Natural History (VIII. 107) variously described the crocotta as a combination between dog and wolf or between hyena and lion.

giraffa = il nome comune italiano giraffa deriva dall'arabo zarrāfa, a sua volta derivato dall'egiziano zor-aph che significa "lungo collo". The name "giraffe" has its earliest known origins in the Arabic word zarafa, perhaps from some African language. The name is translated as "fast-walker". There were several Middle English spellings such as jarraf, ziraph, and gerfauntz. The word possibly was derived from the animal's Somali name geri. The Italian form giraffa arose in the 1590s. The modern English form developed around 1600 from the French girafe.

Indris vox barbara Prosimii
parola straniera foreign word The name "indri" most likely comes from a native Malagasy name for the animal, endrina. An oft-repeated, but probably incorrect story is that the name comes from indry, meaning "there" or "there it is". French naturalist Pierre Sonnerat, who first described the animal, supposedly heard a Malagasy point out the animal and took the word to be its name.

In ancient Roman religion, Inuus was a god, or aspect of a god, who embodied copulation. The evidence for him as a distinct entity is scant. Servius says that Inuus is an epithet of Faunus (Greek Pan), named from his habit of intercourse with animals, based on the etymology of ineundum, "a going in, penetration," from inire, "to enter" in the sexual sense.

Kangurus vox barbara Marsupialia
Kangaroo, from Guugu Yimidhirr gangurru, recorded by James Cook and others in 1770 at Endeavour River; in English, applied to the whole family of macropods, apparently from not realizing the Guugu Yimidhirr word referred to just one species. In 1820 Phillip King visited the area and could not confirm Cooks record; some then suggested that Cook and Banks had erred. This is apparently the basis for the long-standing myth that Cook is supposed to have asked a native "What is that?" to which the reply "kangaroo", supposedly meaning "I dont know", was given. Though amusing, this is not the case. John Haviland studied Guugu Yimidhirr extensively in 1972, confirming gangurru and concluding King had been told minha.

Koala vox barbara Marsupialia
The word koala comes from the Dharug gula. Although the vowel 'u' was originally written in the English orthography as "oo" (in spellings such as coola or koolah), it was changed to "oa", possibly in error. The word is mistakenly said to mean "doesn't drink". Because of the koala's resemblance to a bear, it was often miscalled the koala bear, particularly by early settlers. Other names like monkey bear, native bear, and tree-bear have also been used. Indigenous names include cullawine, koolawong, colah, karbor, colo, coolbun, boorabee, burroor, bangaroo, pucawan, banjorah, and burrenbong; many of these mean "no drink".

In Greek mythology, Lycaon was a king of Arcadia, son of Pelasgus and Meliboea, who in the most popular version of the myth tested Zeus by serving him a dish of his slaughtered and dismembered son in order to see whether Zeus was truly omniscient. parola introvabile untraceable word Faina Martes foina: a quanto pare Martes deriverebbe da Marte Mars/Martis, il dio della guerra e si tratterebbe di una trasformazione dell'aggettivo latino martius, scritto preferibilmente Martius, nel significato di bellicoso: Bestia martia et pugnax. Quod vi martia mures gallinasque necet. Bestia bellicosa e pugnace. In quanto con una forza bellicosa uccide i ratti e le galline.
In Roman mythology, Mefitis (or Mephitis; Mefite in Italian) was the personification of the poisonous gases emitted from the ground in swamps and volcanic vapors. Mephitic, derived from Mefitis, is an adjective in the English language meaning "offensive in odor"; "noxious"; and "poisonous." A mefite is also a solfatara or fumarole (i.e., a gaseous fissure) associated with the Roman Goddess, Mefitis.

Midas nom. mythol. Simiae platyrrhinae
The most famous King Midas is popularly remembered in Greek mythology for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold. This came to be called the Golden touch, or the Midas touch. The Phrygian city Midaeum was presumably named after this Midas, and this is probably also the Midas that according to Pausanias founded Ancyra.

Mormon nom. propr. Simiae catarrhinae
Mormon is believed by followers of Mormonism to have been the narrator of much of the Book of Mormon, a sacred text of the Latter Day Saint movement, which describes him as a prophet-historian and a member of a tribe of indigenous Americans known as the Nephites. According to the Book of Mormon, the prophet Mormon engraved an abridgement of his people's history on golden plates, which were later translated by Joseph Smith, Jr.. Based on the chronology of the book, Mormon lived during the 4th century AD.

Myrmidon nom. mythol. Edentata
The Myrmidons or Myrmidones were legendary people of Greek history. They were very brave and skilled warriors commanded by Achilles, as described in Homer's Iliad. Their eponymous ancestor was Myrmidon, a king of Thessalian Phthia, who was the son of Zeus and "wide-ruling" Eurymedousa, a princess of Phthia. She was seduced by Zeus in the form of an ant.

He is now believed to have been describing gorillas, but in the late 18th century, all great apes were believed to be orangutans, hence Lacpde's use of Pongo for the genus.

Tamandua vox barbara Edentata
The word tamandu is Tupi for "anteater", and in Tupi and Portuguese refers to anteaters in general. In those languages, the tamandua is called tamandu-mirim (mirim means "small"). Tamandua is a genus of anteaters with two species: the southern tamandua (T. tetradactyla) and the northern tamandua (T. mexicana). They live in forests and grasslands, are semiarboreal, and possess partially prehensile tails. They mainly eat ants and termites, but they occasionally eat bees, beetles, and insect larvae.

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), also known as caribou in North America, is a species of deer native to Arctic, Subarctic, tundra, boreal and mountainous regions. The name rangifer, which Linnaeus chose as the name for the reindeer genus, was used by Albertus Magnus in his De animalibus, fol. Liber 22, Cap. 268: "Dicitur Rangyfer quasi ramifer". This word may go back to a Saami word raingo. For the origin of the word tarandus, which Linnaeus chose as the specific epithet, he made reference to Ulisse Aldrovandi's Quadrupedum omnium bisulcorum historia fol. 859863, Cap. 30: De Tarando (1621). However, Aldrovandi and before him Konrad Gesner thought that rangifer and tarandus were two separate animals. In any case, the tarandos name goes back to Aristotle and Theophrastus.

Wombats are short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupials, native to Australia, approximately 1 metre (40 in) in length, with short, stubby tails. They are adaptable in habitat tolerance, and are found in forested, mountainous, and heathland areas of south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, as well as an isolated patch of about 300 hectares (740 acres) in Epping Forest National Park[2] in central Queensland. The name wombat comes from the Eora Aboriginal community who were the original inhabitants of the Sydney area.

The sable (Martes zibellina) is a species of marten which inhabits forest environments, primarily in Russia from the Ural Mountains throughout Siberia, eastern Kazakhstan, northern Mongolia, China, North and South Korea and Hokkaidō in Japan. The name sable appears to be of Slavic origin and to have entered most Western European languages via the early medieval fur trade. Thus the Russian sobol and Polish sobl became the German Zobel, Dutch Sabel; the French zibeline, Spanish cibelina, cebellina, Finnish soopeli, Portuguese zibelina and Mediaeval Latin zibellina derive from the Italian form (zibellino). The English and Medieval Latin word sabellum comes from the Old French sable or saible.
