Gauloise – French cock on necklace
Purchased in 1996 at an Antiques & Flea Market in Brussels (Belgium).
There was no information available on the subject, not even a possible date.
I think it is very well possible that it originally was only a ‘medallion’ that had no golden border, but is later designed this way to create a pendant, to hang on a necklace. The surface of the medallion seems to be glass, covering a very detailed golden cock at a dark brown background. It is clapping its wings, standing on a bunch of wooden sticks with an axe bind to it (fasces). In the left/below are oak leaves and in the right/below other leaves and berries (probably laurel or olives). Then in the middle/below are the initials R.F. - most likely the monogram of République Française. Around is a golden border decorated with flowers. The size is about of a 2 euro coin.
