PREFAZIONE

The method of treatment adopted in this book is the simple, scientific method, ― that of presenting essential facts in logical order. The following of this method has led to some departures from the conventional way of presenting poultry topics. The unity of the poultry group is here conceived as essential and arising from the nature of birds, rather than as artificial and relating to the purposes for which they are used; and I have tried to give practical effect to my very strong conviction that permanent poultry culture must be a feature in permanent agriculture, and that each of the common kinds of poultry has its peculiar place in agriculture. Hence the methods of managing the different kinds of poultry are not stated separately, as has been usual, but topics are discussed in their own appropriate order with reference to all the kinds. This arrangement emphasizes the things which apply alike to all kinds of poultry, and makes it easy to show that good practice is simple and that the same treatment will usually answer, in whole or in part, for several different kinds, thus lightening the work of the poultry keeper. It is believed also that by this arrangement of matter the student or reader is given, with instruction in the details of methods, a more comprehensive view of the subject as a whole than by the usual mode of presenting it.

Il metodo di trattazione adottato in questo libro è il metodo semplice, scientifico, ― quello di presentare fatti essenziali in ordine logico. Il seguito di questo metodo ha condotto ad alcune deviazioni dal modo convenzionale di presentare argomenti sul pollame. L'unità del gruppo dei polli è concepita qui come essenziale e proveniente dalla natura degli uccelli, piuttosto che come artificiale e relativa agli scopi per i quali sono usati; e io ho tentato di dare un effetto pratico alla mia molto forte convinzione che la permanente cultura sui polli deve essere una caratteristica in agricoltura permanente, e che ognuno dei tipi comuni di polli ha il suo posto particolare in agricoltura. Per cui i metodi di maneggiare i diversi tipi di polli non sono affermati separatamente, come è stato abituale, ma gli argomenti sono discussi nel loro giusto ordine con riferimento a tutti i tipi. Questa organizzazione enfatizza le cose che si applicano analogamente a tutti i tipi di polli, e rende facile mostrare che la buona pratica è semplice e che lo stesso trattamento di solito risponderà, per intero o in parte, per molti tipi diversi, illuminando così il lavoro del custode di polli. Si crede anche che con questa sistemazione dell’argomento viene data allo studente o al lettore, con istruzione dettagliata dei metodi, una prospettiva più comprensiva del soggetto nell'insieme piuttosto che nella maniera solita di presentarlo.

To the best of my ability the book gives the consensus of authoritative opinion of a many-sided subject. In appraising this consensus I have had regard alike to practical authority, expressed in the views and practice of good poultrymen, and to scientific authority, found in the bulletins and other papers of those instructors and investigators who have been foremost in reducing to order the confused mass of common knowledge of poultry culture. To the practical poultrymen and fanciers I am most indebted for facts; to the instructors and investigators, for interpretations of facts and for [VIII] ideas and suggestions as to the presentation of the subject in such a way as to meet the requirements of formal instruction.

Al meglio della mia abilità il libro dà il consenso di opinione autorevole di un soggetto poliedrico. Nel valutare questo consenso ho avuto riguardo simile ad autorità pratica, espressa nei punti di vista e nella pratica di buoni pollicoltori, e ad autorità scientifica, trovata nei bollettini e altre carte di quegli istruttori e investigatori che sono stati i primi nel ridurre in ordine la massa confusa di conoscenza comune della cultura sui polli. Ai pratici pollicoltori e appassionati io sono molto indebitato per fatti realmente accaduti; agli istruttori e investigatori, per interpretazioni di fatti e per idee e suggerimenti come alla presentazione del soggetto in tale modo come soddisfare i requisiti di istruzione formale.

To give credit, in the proper connection, to each of the many whose experiences and opinions have contributed something to a work which represents a life interest in poultry and more than a score of years of intimate business and professional acquaintance with poultry culture would be impossible. So it has seemed best to make few direct references in the text, but to give in the appendix a classified list of the literature of the subject.

Dare credito, nel collegamento corretto, a ognuna delle molte esperienze e opinioni che hanno contribuito un po’ a un lavoro che rappresenta un interesse di vita nel pollame e più di un risultato di anni di affari intimi e conoscenza professionale con cultura di pollame, sarebbe impossibile. Quindi è sembrato meglio fare poche referenze dirette nel testo, ma dare nell'appendice un elenco classificato della letteratura del soggetto.

The illustrations not credited to others are by the author. Although many of the photographs and drawings were made for this book, the elaborate scheme of illustration adopted was practicable only because I already had a large private collection of photographs from which to select, and because I had access to the files of photographs which had been used in Farm-Poultry. Those from the latter source the publishers have kindly allowed me to use, with this general acknowledgment.
