Reptilia
Reptilia – From Latin reptilis, reptile, creeping. Reptiles, the class Reptilia, is an evolutionary grade of animals, comprising today's turtles, crocodilians, snakes, lizards and tuatara, as well their extinct relatives.

Varanus
/ Varanidae – nom. propr. – Lacertidae
varanus = varano – monitor lizard § Il nome varano deriva dalla parola
araba waral, ossia guardiano (nei paesi anglofoni i varani vengono chiamati
monitor lizards, ossia lucertole-guardiano).
– The
generic name Varanus is derived from the Arabic word waral (alternative word
waran). The name comes from a common Semitic root ouran, waran, or waral,
meaning lizard. The occasional habit of varanids to stand on their two hind
legs and to appear to monitor their surroundings has been suggested to have
led to this name, as it was Latinized into Varanus. Its common name is derived
from the Latin word monere meaning to warn.
